The cloud migration checklist: 10 steps to move without downtime

A cloud migration is a great opportunity to improve reliability and reduce costs — if it is planned well. Here is the checklist we use with our clients.

Before the move

  1. Inventory everything: servers, databases, domains, certificates, scheduled jobs and integrations.
  2. Define success: target uptime, performance and monthly budget.
  3. Choose the right model: lift-and-shift, re-platform or re-architect.
  4. Plan security: identity, network rules, encryption and least-privilege access.
  5. Set up monitoring first so you can compare before and after.

During the move

  1. Migrate data with validation — row counts and checksums, not hope.
  2. Run in parallel and test with real traffic before switching.
  3. Lower DNS TTLs in advance so the cut-over is quick.

After the move

  1. Right-size resources after two weeks of real usage data.
  2. Test your backups by actually restoring them.
